What do I major in if I want to be a Special Education teacher?

Stephnie Patout: Your need to get a teaching endorsement in special education to go along with your bachelors. Any school youre considering can set this up for you. Some even have programs where you can get multiple endorsements at one time (such as reading and special ed)

Claire Billegas: It depends on the state you want to teach in. In many states, you can get a Bachelor's degree in any subject, and then you get your teaching credential as 5th year of study. Some states do have a BA course of study in special education, but in most cases, you can get your BA in any subject that you are interested in, since you have to complete a 5th year of study to get your credential. Your best bet is to check with the Department of Education in the state where you intend to teach. You should be able to find their websites and look at the requirements for getting a credential in any subject area. You will need to refine what you want to do before you start to study. Go to schools and ask teachers working in those areas to give you some ideas also. Volunteer there to see if you are right for this area of work. Personally, I think its the best....Show more
